Weight was a problem I battled with my whole life, with the exception of a few years. Early in 2011, with the help of my family, I made the decision to have Gastric Bypass Surgery. When I had the surgery on April 29, 2011, I weighed 266 pounds. Today I weigh 134 pounds and hope to achieve my goal of 130 pounds by my anniversary date. I’ve literally lost a “whole me”!
Has it changed my life? Absolutely. In more ways than I can possibly say in just one page. The main reason I had gastric bypass surgery was for my health. While I have always been really healthy, it’s been a concern of mine and of my family. My knees are bad, and the damage has been done. I will have the have knee replacement surgery soon. However, the weight loss will certainly make the recovery much easier. As for my overall health, I haven’t felt this good in a lot of years! My self-confidence has certainly changed. I used to shy away from a lot of situations because of my weight. While they would never say as much, I used to think my family was “embarrassed” by me. I would hesitate to meet my children’s friends and my husband’s business associates. Now I feel like people can see who I really am instead of looking at me as a “fat” person.
I think a low point came for me just a few weeks before I had gastric bypass surgery. I flew to Virginia to my son’s house when he and his wife had a baby. On that flight, I had to have a seat belt extender. I had to fight back the tears when I asked the flight attendant for it. I can now sit in a middle seat with about a foot of seat belt leftover. I know being able to put the tray table down on the airplane is a little thing, but for someone who used to be obese, it is a “huge” buy phentermine no prescription accomplishment!
I have seven grandchildren. I can now get on the floor and play with them and hold them on my lap! I no longer get totally worn out after they have been at my house for a couple of hours. I’m able to have grandma sleepovers without dread! I can go to their school programs and not have to worry about sitting on an aisle seat in the auditorium because I “hang over.”
Sometimes I walk by a window and see my reflection and don’t even recognize the person I’m seeing. I like that person for the first time in many, many years! A few weeks ago we went to wedding reception and saw people I haven’t seen for a few years. Literally, no one recognized me. They only knew me after stopping to talk to my husband and realizing it was me. That’s fun. I was talking to one woman that I saw just a few months ago. When we walked away my son said, “Mom, you know she had no clue who you were.” He told me I should start introducing myself. A few minutes later she came and apologized. She said she recognized my voice, but figured it must be my sister or something. We got a good laugh out of it.
I LOVE to shop now. I can actually buy clothes because they look good instead of because they merely fit. I still cry when I am in a dressing room trying on clothes, but now for a totally different reason! What’s next? WE’RE GOING TO DISNEYLAND!
