Single Anastomosis Duodeno-Ileal Bypass with Sleeve Gastrectomy

The Single Anastomosis Duodenal-Ileal Bypass with Sleeve Gastrectomy, referred to as the SADI-S is the most recent procedure to be endorsed by the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery. While similar to the Duodenal Switch, the SADI-S is simpler and takes less time to perform as there is only one surgical bowel connection.

The operation consists of the following elements:

* Sleeve Gastrectomy is Performed: Approximately 75-80% of the stomach is removed by removing the greater curvature of the stomach (the left side of the stomach) creating a small stomach holding approximately 4-6 oz. of food. In some patients who, in the judgment of your surgeon, are too high of risk to continue with the complete operation, the operation may be discontinued after the stomach is removed with the plan to allow weight loss and improvement of your medical condition with completion of the remainder of the operation at a later date (6-12 months) in order to receive full benefit.

* Single (Loop) Bowel Connection: single (loop) bowel connection”: the small intestine (bowel) is counted 300 cm (about 9 feet) upstream from the large intestine and brought up to connect to the first portion of the duodenum. This connection (also called anastomosis) is made about 1-2 inches from the end of the stomach. The pathway of food as it exits the stomach is to go through a small segment of the duodenum, then through the 9 feet of small bowel before it then goes into the large intestine (colon).
