It is important to us here at Rocky Mountain Associated Physiciansthat, you as our patient, have all the necessary information you will need prior to surgery and for postoperative lifestyle adjustments.
When you consent to undergo weight loss surgery you must be aware that your anatomy will be altered and that the risk of complication is possible. Your surgeon will explain the alteration process and will go over the complications that may occur during or after your surgery. Post-Op Day 1
- You will want to start walking frequently. Getting up and walking around after surgery is essential to decrease the risk of experiencing a Pulmonary Embolism. Early reporting of leg or chest pain to your surgeon is essential.
- You will begin your new diet stages that consists of clear liquids and water only. You can go here to read more about the clear liquid diet.
- A dietitian will come and talk with you.
- You will have your JP Drain and staples removed, (unless told otherwise).
After Discharge
- Shower daily and wash your incisions with soap and water to lessen the risk of infection.
- Walk even more!! You will want to start walking at least 4-6 times a day.
- DO NOT DRIVE! If you are still taking any pain medications that could impair or affect you, do not drive or operate machinery. It is okay to take Tylenol.
- Water, water, water! Remember to drink water throughout the day; do not limit. To read more about water and the importance of it after weight loss surgery, go here.
- Have a follow-up appoint scheduled with RMAP for 3-4 weeks after surgery date. (Out of state patients may follow up with their primary care physician if it is easier for them.)
Restrictions
- No bathing (take a shower instead) or swimming until incisions are completely healed; about 2-3 weeks.
- No driving if still taking pain medications.
- Resume daily activities as before surgery, but wait 2 weeks before starting any NEW activities.
Exercise
- You may start exercising once you are home. It will now be apart of your new lifestyle and it will play a key part to your success! Your goal is to workout at least 30-40 minutes per day of cardio/strength training. You can read more about exercising here.
Vitamins
- You will take vitamins every day for the rest of your life. It is a life-long commitment and required by our surgeons to help prevent any nutritional deficiencies. To read more about vitamins, go here.
The relationship you have with your surgeon and primary care physician is important for your long-term success along with your participation in support groups and educational activities.
